From my basic understanding of gut science, the bacteria that do the actual digestion for you grow and multiply based on what you eat. So if you’re a professional athlete and you eat a diet tailored for performance you’ll have more bacteria for digesting protein and carbohydrates. If you’re a normal schlub like us you’ll have a mix of stuff depending on what you tend to eat.
You cam shift your gut flora but it takes years and years of work to do but fecal transplants basically put a whole package of the bacteria you want directly into your gut kick starting that shift if you’re feeding them the stuff that they want.
I’ve read about this sort of thing for trying to cure various gastro-intestinal conditions like crohns but not specifically for performance gains. Sounds possibly legit but as with all “miracle treatments” potentially complete bullshit magic beans.
it doesn’t take years and years, it takes like 2 years maybe with noticable changes in what foods you want to eat within like… months… of consistently eating the target foods.
like i’ve done it myself, you just start with adding a small amount of the target food to your meals, increasing it until you’re comfortable with a normal portion, and keep keep eating that portion with your meals. Before you know it you find yourself thinking “man i want some beans” or whatever.
A few years ago i ate a standard garbage western diet with lots of fast food and soda, now it feels pretty wrong to not have any vegetables in a meal and i often get very specific gut-deep cravings for specific healthy foods.

Years and years is an edge case. Within a year or so you’ll notice the changes. Changes I’ve personally experienced include cutting out sugar and substitutes and completely losing my sweet tooth within a few months, and quitting meat and after about a year I could tell whenever I accidentally eat it from the gastrointestinal discomfort.
The thing is you gotta commit to it.
I suppose “bullshit magic beans” means we can eat grass now?
No, because our stomachs still do most of the work. It just makes it easier for the fuy fauna to access other nutrients.
If you don’t want to eat shit, try eating fermented food, especially stuff you ferment yourself. Kimchi, sauerkraut, fermented pickles…all good for refreshing your gut biome.

Fecal transplanting is actually a legitimate medical treatment.
indeed …and yet!
“eat shit”
True, but surely it doesn’t work the way South Park joked about.
Enshitification
…I would try it. My gut biome is shot.
Years of drinking destroyed mine, and it’s all my fault. I would also try it.
Same. There was no other way! 🥂
Literal shitpost.
TIL: I’d rather not crush it at the gym
You almost gave me a heart attack. I thought this was an ad placed in Lemmy.
You scared the shit out of me.
…
Why do I have the urge to go to the gym?
Ok, but like… Couldn’t they isolate and identify the bacteria strains and then make them fresh? Maybe 2 or 3 generations removed from direct poop? And like wash your hands between handling the poop and making the pill? Or does that defeat the purpose?
The first part is not feasible, since the microbiome has thousands, if not tens of thousands, of distinct species, we aren’t at a point where we could individually isolate, analyse, and reproduce all of these strains successfully.
Ugh, fine, I’ll eat the poop I guess.
Goodish news… You wouldn’t be eating the poop. It’d be thrown in a blender until it reached an enema appropriate viscosity.

CRUSHING IT AT THE GYM IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN THE WORLD! GIMME THE POOP!!
Please, tell me at least that it’s not intended to be put in the mouth…
👉💊🍑
I thought eating healthier specimens’ poop was what rodents did. The last time I checked, humans weren’t classified as rodents 😂
