TFW you’re australian so you type “AUST” and hit enter but all of a sudden you’re wearing lederhosen and yodeling at some mountains.

I imagine the Australian embassy in Vienna already has forms to handle the situation, and so does the Austrian one in Canberra.

What’s worse is not knowing if it’s going to be (E)ngland, (G)reat Britain or the (U)nited Kingdom. I always scroll to the wrong point on the list first

And then, surprise! It’s a UK company so they artificially put it at the TOP of the alphabetical list, but you didn’t notice it before you scrolled everywhere else first.

Same here, can be (G)ermany or (D)eutschland.
And when the website sucks (looking at you Microsoft), it’s Deutschland, but placed in the list at G.

Or (A)llemagne, (N)iemcy, (T)yskland, (S)aksa, (V)asija (you won’t encounter the last two unless you use a website in Finnish or Estonian, however the first three are used in numerous countries including Germany’s neighbors).
The lists are occasionally auto-translated, sometimes I see “🇹🇷 Truthahn”.

Similarly, sometimes forms use foreign countries’ English names, and sometimes the native names. Pretty annoying as a German.

And a special “screw you” to any UI devs that don’t use the native behavior when typing letters while focused on a select field.

Zimbabwe has the advantage of being at the bottom of the list, so you just scroll all the way down and click.

It’s the same advantage as having a Volvo.

I’m in Finland and it’s always mildly weird when these country lists have “Aland Islands” right in the top. I’m not entirely sure in which circumstances the folks from Åland even pick that option. But, I mean, it’s an autonomous region, they do have the right to mildly confuse the people who collect user statistics.

(There was also that one incident when some Google product wasn’t available in EU as a whole due to regulations that had to be sorted out, but it was somehow available in Åland because Google did an oopsie.)

Also some places have option “Finland” and some have “Suomi” and it should never be “Suomi” unless it’s a Finnish site IMO.

Also some sites ask for email addresses.

I give them my .fi address.

The sites then go “did you mean .fr?”

And I’m like “No actually I’m in Finland. It’s a whole different country. Don’t get me wrong, I love the French, great country. I love our EU brothers and sisters and enbypals. Just don’t buy a nuclear reactor from them.”

Do you know what the worst thing about being from Antarctica is? Those country lists rarely include it. Penguins should invade and conquer the world, for the greatness of the Penguin Country.🐧🇦🇶

Of course a lot of these, particularly this with nearly or entirely US users, just put the US at the top. Which is smart. I’d expect shit based on other countries to do likewise, especially non-English sites.
