For the life of me, I don’t understand why they rebranded themselves. HBO is such a recognized brand. I was confused at first about what Max was.

Because they have begun fucking over their customers and don’t want to associate HBO with that

Agree. HBO is some high class, quality shit. Max is meaningless. I guess it corresponds with the CEO of Discovery channel coming in to wreck HBO in the same way he did Discovery.

It’s like Twitter rebranding to X. It’s extremely detrimental to the brand, but it makes some executive feel really good about themselves and that’s all that really matters apparently.

Isn’t Max literally Cinemax’s streaming service, that merged with HBO Now to form HBO Max, and is now back to being just Max?

This is the part that was, for some reason, never communicated to anyone. HBO streaming didn’t rebrand, they were absorbed into Cinemax.

Didn’t Cinemax originally run a bunch of porn?

        Next iteration should be CliMax.

EDIT I think back in the day it was jokingly called skinamax for that reason.

Based on my experience working with PR teams and executives - you probably had a bored PR team that wanted to do something that feels important or relavent, and they pitched it to the exec team in a way that made them feel all important and excited (they probably threw in the phrase “lifestyle brand” a few times), so they went with it against all reason

I just canceled their service today.

Removing 4k streaming from my subscription is the last straw for me. Fuck you, Max, for fucking over tons of content creators before this. Fuck discovery and fuck your garbage reality TV content trash. Fuck your terrible new app layout. Just generally fuck this era of streaming services.

I’m so pissed because HBO Max was a pretty great service for a time.

The high seas, on the other hand, are pretty fantastic these days.

HBO Max was the last service I still had before I fully committed to the high seas, for similar reasons. Removing Westworld before many people were even finished with the newest season was the final straw. There’s nothing on any streaming service that I haven’t been able to get in the same quality through *arr apps onto my Plex, including usually HDR and 5.1 now that I have rules set up to upgrade to those when available.

Isn’t it just a legalese game? Hey we’re HBO and we agree to this and that and this show and that arrangement and with this guy and that production.

A year later … OK now we’re HBO Go … all agreements with HBO? Gone and changed, we’re HBO Go now and these are our new terms, new productions, new people, new pricing, we make all the rules, f you

A year later … Ok sorry about all the changes with HBO Go, … we’re now HBO Max … the old name was shit you were right … but we’re making changes again and this time they’re great … for us … again … and not you …

A year later … yeah HBO Max sucked … but we’re changed to HBO Super Duper Time and we’re changing rules and formats and pricing again because we can because we changed our name

I’m betting on just Axe. This is mainly based on what they do to fully dfinished programming already slated for their platform.

Don’t get why they’d want to be known as Max. Max is far, far inferior to HBO in content.

HBO is a premium brand, if they name their streaming service with that name and they start pushing up crap realities as Netflix did their brand is going to be destroyed.
