Hello
I never really understood the concept of ChromeOS. Is there really such a use case of a computer entirely dedicated to running Chrome ?
People claiming a dish should not contain this or that ingredient do not have any creativity and are the type of people who would have never invented their recipe in the first place. So don’t listen to them and keep making good cooking.
Redirecting twitter.com to another domain is not an impossible amount of work. What takes time is changing every references to the old domain name.
99.99% of the users are in the USA
are they
Always glad to see some people can burn their money like this

I suppose it’s also a remnant of the reddit community. I agree it sounds weird, but it was also the result of the limitations of Reddit. I don’t think you could easily create a tag for each country, and even then, it wasn’t user friendly to filter them based on your preferences. So because of this, and because r/politics was already US only to begin with, it was just the easy solution to get every other news content.
I don’t want to launch a petition to be honest, I just wanted to see what the other members of the instance thought about it (mainly because I wondered if Lemmy.world was in fact mostly composed of US members). I agree that a community should not be renamed/removed if it does not break any rule or do anything that deserve such a treatment.
As I said in other posts, not all communities on Lemmy.world must be international, that would not make any sense. But I would not create a c/photography community and ban any non french content for example. If a community is specific to one country, it’s a reasonable approach to say it in the name if any member of the instance has not more chance to belong to this country than another.
From the Lemmy.world description:
“A generic Lemmy server for everyone to use. The World’s Internet Frontpage Lemmy.world is a general-purpose Lemmy instance of various topics, for the entire world to use.”
And the logo is an earth. It does not forbid any community restricted to one specific country (neither should it, it’s perfectly normal), but it sure isn’t specifically tied to the US. I think a fair comparison would be if c/politics was China content only, that would looks weird too (even more so because of the language but well, surely you get my point).
Well I’m not really the kind of person to follow these communities anyway. What I pointed out wasn’t a community with a majority of US members (that is no problem whatsoever), it’s that the rules strictly enforce US content. From what I understand from the moderator’s own post, it’s a moderation issue (which sounds okay to me). I was just highlighting the inconsistency between the choice of the community name VS what Lemmy.world tries to encourage. But it’s not the end of the world.
Yes it’s not a space problem, space in the fediverse is near unlimited. It’s about following the philosophy of Lemmy.world I guess.
And that’s good. No more “subreddits” monopoly. If a mod or mod team goes against the will of their users they can just move on another instance without needing to use another name (and it’s easier to find afterward). As a user, you just need to subscribe to these redundant communities (or not if you don’t care about federation but if not why are you on Lemmy) and it will appear in your front-page as if it was one and only community.
Safe in limited amount, so just like normal sugar then. Just don’t drink liters of soda each day. (Or even better, don’t drink soda but water instead)
Kubuntu 14.04 burned on a CD my brother gave me when I started studying programming. Switched a lot along the way and ironically ended up on Kubuntu 23.04. I love KDE.
Phones are never good for environment, it’s a resource sink. But it’s better than most others and it’s enough :-)
A lot of phones are disposed of despite being perfectly functional (at least some are saved by the second hand market) just because the manufacturer released a new version with a slightly better camera sensor and more RAM. It has gotten a bit ridiculous. Fairphones are not perfect, but being able to keep them more than 2-3 years without being left with an unmaintained glued brick is what makes at least a small difference.
The whole philosophy of Fairphone is keeping it as long as possible through long term maintenance and access to spare part for self repairs. Fairphones are “outdated” almost at launch in terms of hardware in comparison to most phones on the market because this is not what we (fairphone customers) are looking for.
There is no end goal in life. If you are satisfied on the day to day, there’s no reason to be depressed because other people do other things. An infinitely small number of people do the things you mentioned.
Gave up my windows boot and only use Linux since recently. I kept using Windows for gaming (although it means I used it 99% of the time as a result). But retried linux gaming with Proton and everything runs smoothly enough for me. From big games like SF6 to native games like POE, it’s such a pleasure to see that everything “just works” most of the time. I kept my W10 dual boot in case some specific game just cannot be handled by Linux.
With the switch to Lemmy and now a full switch to Linux, I’m glad I threw away all these adwares :-)
And by its very nature, the fairphone cost is amortized over the long time you won’t need to replace it with a brand new phone :-) (although you need to take into account the possibility of replacing an expensive part, which are not cheap indeed but still way cheaper than a new phone anyway)
Breaking news: It appears that mosquitos have dreams … dreams about conquering spiders and humans alike.
