Welcome to today’s daily kōrero!

Anyone can make the thread, first in first served. If you are here on a day and there’s no daily thread, feel free to create it!

Anyway, it’s just a chance to talk about your day, what you have planned, what you have done, etc.

So, how’s it going?

Today’s mission: set up dual boot on my laptop and hopefully not melt or defenestrate the entire thing.

Fedora kde and win11. I’m using OneDrive as a file server/ online backup though so I’m probably just making my life difficult but I hate the way AI is being bolted onto windows when it’s unreliable and built on janky datasets.

Any plans on gaming on Linux? If so, I’d recommend Nobara instead (which is based on Fedora, but optimized for gaming).

I’m very much a casual (half-assed) gamer. I’m just as happy with a nice-looking Freecell as whatever Steam feels like sharing. I’ll probably spend more time tinkering with WINE to see if I can get Affinity running on it so I don’t have to boot into windows except for work.

Affinity has Pantone support built in and can switch between publisher and photo mode flawlessly so the workflow is better than inDesign/Photoshop. As for work stuff, I’m stuck with Adobe products so it’s more or less non-negotiable. Most of what I do is done in inDesign so I think Scribus would be the closest alternative, but I’ll be trying everything I think. It’s probably 5 years since I last used linux as a daily driver so I’m keen to see how far the software has come.

Tested positive for covid for the 2nd time yesterday. Definitely not feeling as bad as I did in January, just frustrating as I had a lot organised for the coming week.

Oh that sucks, hope you don’t get too much worse. If you can, definitely take the antivirals, they can make a huge difference (just make sure you get a few packs of tic-tacs to goi with them because the main side effect is metallic dog breath for a week)

60+ for pakeha, 50+ for Maori / Pacific Islander, or be classed as immuno-compromised, or your previous covid infection was severe.

I actually thought they’d loosened the criteria up but I guess not :(

Supposedly it costs $13 USD to produce a five-day course of medication, but it’s sold to governments at disgusting prices because they can get away with it. It wouldn’t be capitalism if useful medicine was easily accessible, would it?

That $13 is the cost to produce, it doesn’t include the $1B-$3B USD cost to develop, test, and bring a drug to market, or the sunk cost of drugs that never hit the market.

Plus companies only have 7 years before the patent expires and other companies can produce it without the R&D cost.

Also, almost no one is paying sticker price, and pharmac pays some of the lowest prices in the world for drugs.

I’m not going to argue it isn’t still too much, but quoting the production cost is disingenuous because the cost of drugs is in R&D not the actual cost of prduction.

The markup is obscene, for sure. I think it was only last week it was announced the price is going up to US consumers, to around $1400 for a weeks’ supply. I don’t know how the billionaires expect to make money off their slaves if they’re all too busy dropping dead from lack of adequate healthcare.

Really rainy here today. Maybe I can get some paperwork done, that sort of thing. Try to get my tiny business back on track.

I collapsed in the shower the other day which was super embarassing so I’m trying to take it easy.
