That is so bleak… An entire huge pod beached together. I wonder what could lead to such intelligent animals beaching themselves like that. It sounds like scientists are unsure of what caused them to become beached. Just “maybe illness or stress” but that’s pretty vague…
Lemmings are known to migrate when the population in their area becomes too large for its food supply. During these migrations, some will swim to cross bodies of water, but not all of them will make it back to land alive. This unfortunate consequence of migration has sometimes been perceived as an act of mass suicide. This myth has been popularized in various media.

Maybe it’s the climate.
Or a lifetime of constant excruciatingly loud sonar blasts. Combine the two & I’d be beaching myself as well.
Aren’t often Freighters and Cruise ships often the reason for ths because it confuses their navigation (and terrifies them)?
