How are those contradictory? Can a civilian force not shakedown people to protect property?
I think the idea is that civilian force has governmental protections that other civilians would otherwise never have.

The enshitification is a very real thing unfortunately.
To be fair, piracy does drive down sales, as some of the people who would otherwise buy the game do pirate it.
Do we know that for sure? If games don’t have demos, and don’t have pirated copies available, how do you know that people who would have otherwise pirated it are just going to go ahead and buy it?
Also, isn’t the opposite true? If pirated copies of games are available, won’t some people treat them as demos and if they like the game then they will end up buying it to support the developer and to get official updates for the game?
I’m glad I’m starting to get to be old enough to be exempt for any mandatory national service but damn if that wouldn’t make this country worse overall.
Took the words right out of my mouth. This is concerning but I guess we will see what happens.
I tried it just now, and it seems to kind of have the opposite problem. With scaled, I’m having trouble finding the most popular posts of the day/past couple days.
I feel like sorting is probably going to be something that will take years to get it to be quite right. Active does seem to provide a pretty good browsing experience though.
Kind of. Reddit 15+ years ago still had a larger user base than Lemmy did, but it feels kind of close to how Reddit did back then. Lemmy still needs some work, it has a long way to go, but I do like it so far.
Honestly this might be a good thing. It might push more users to Firefox causing more competition for Chrome/Chromium.
I miss the niche communities from reddit. Things like emulation, datahoarding, discussions of my local sports teams, etc just aren’t as common here. Conversations are fewer and more far between.
With that said, the conversations here are generally higher quality and I haven’t really seen many bots which is nice.
There are some pain points. The sorting could be improved, I feel like maybe they could have multiple post sort orders like a primary and a secondary. I want to prioritize the top daily posts with the most points, but that makes some smaller communities unusable because they only have one post every few days and all the discussion happens in there. Or, maybe per-community versus home page having different sort orders, something like that. When there’s less content, it’s important for it to be more discoverable. I tried out “Hot” sorting but I didn’t really like it, so then I switched to “Active” sorting and that’s what I’ve been using for the past week.
Yeah but that’s not new, that has existed for years even in Merlin firmware. People were saying that this affects Merlin but I’m not seeing any indication of it yet.
Yes I know ASUS is shitty and evil, and it sucks that those features are gated behind abandoning your privacy, but I was saying that part isn’t new, and I don’t think this new stuff affects Merlin yet.
We’ll see how it all plays out, though.
No. I sent it for RMA 9 months out of warranty on May 8th, and I won’t be getting it back until June 10. Apparently my firmware got corrupted. The software went bad. Valve is a software company and the software went bad. $120 USD to reprogram the firmware incl shipping, but I’ll likely also have to pay import fees on top of that.
If I had it then I would play it more, yeah, but at the same time I’ve bought other SBCs since then and I have been playing those as they are more portable and I’ve really missed portable game emulation since I’ve been without my Steam Deck.
Mine was completely out of the blue, but I also wasn’t surprised as it was happening. I finished a project I wrote myself to replace an old system their other developers didn’t want to work on. They rewarded me by keeping me on for a couple months of post-launch support and then rewarded me by laying me off as a thanks, providing the bare minimum required payments as required by law and tried to get me to sign my rights away, and they refused. They likely replaced me with someone cheaper, which is impressive considering I was already underpaid for my level. I ended up getting a job paying 30% higher (which is actually what happened with that job prior too lol, there is a bit of a pattern tbh that started from my first dev job making barely above min wage), but I honestly think I was still a little bit surprised when I proved I knew the old and new tech. They said they would provide a reference but when I asked my manager for a letter of recommendation, I never heard back from him. What a dickhead lmao
Realistically, that manager replaced me and some other developers with his friends, it was a cheap company rampant with nepotism especially on certain teams, but it was still a company with hundreds of employees so it was a bit surprising to see that.
Merlin
That thread isn’t about Merlin firmware?
I’m impressed that so many people know ahead of time they are getting laid off. When I was laid off, and my friends were laid off, it was either a meeting with my manager and HR sneaking in at the last second, or a meeting with the CEO and HR, etc. Blindsighted, credentials inactive right away, can’t say goodbye to your coworkers.
It is my understanding that they’re going to try to get you to say something on the record or worse sign something they can deny your legal rights over.
It depends on where you live. Where I live, if they get you to sign it on the spot it’s very likely unenforceable as you need time to have legal documents reviewed so you aren’t just blindly signing your rights away.
It’s true, we are za warudo.
Unfortunately there are too many stupid Americans, sorry.
True, at the end of the day it does come down to number of users, unfortunately. More users does mean more potential help/contributions. I just wish more people would switch to Firefox or another non-Chromium browser.
Maybe that would be a good thing, maybe it would force people onto Firefox?
Wait, I don’t understand the difference.
