  • The lockdowns were on a state and local level, enacted by Democrat governors, mayors, and legislation, and you know it. And of course the Democrats didn’t cause covid. The idea that the government can dictate what’s essential and what isn’t sounds like fascism to me. Especially when you’ve got a bunch of these “science believers” vacationing in Florida and Texas so they don’t have to abide by the covid restrictions they pushed for in their own cities and states.

Both Republicans and Democrats are different breeds of fascism and stupidity at this point, and if you can’t criticize your own side, you’re in cult.

  • By default, your instance will only know about communities on that instance and communities that users of that instance have intentionally subscribed to. Unfortunately, this causes problems for users of smaller instances unless the instance admins are running a federation helper bot, which basically scans remote instances for communities and adds them to the instance.

I found this out the hard way when I first tried Lemmy, since I picked a tiny instance due to the larger ones being overloaded in June. I had a hell of a time trying to subscribe to the communities for the new Lemmy apps I was trying out. I kept getting Community Not Found errors until I refreshed the page multiple times until it eventually found the community.

  • Well, I’ve been giving Mammoth and Ice Cubes a try instead of the official app, and I don’t think I’m going back to official. They can both see way more posts, and translation actually works.

The lack of discovery features are why I never really got into Mastodon, but it seems like the third party apps got that right.
