There are some places that do use a base 12 number system.

I’m not defending it, but it’s because 12 has more factors than 10

10 has 2 and 5

But 12 has 2,3,4,6

So 1/2 ft, 1/3 ft, 1/4ft and 1/6 ft all have a whole number of inches
