I used to watch Joe Rogan w my ex. My ex was a Bernie Bro. It turned into Jordan Peterson and Andrew Tate. Now he dates women 10 years younger than him and I live with a roommate and am paying off his luxury car that I co-signed for him that has since been repossessed. He kicked me out of the apartment that I paid for because “he couldn’t stand to share his bed with me anymore” because Andrew tate told him he could do better than me. Look, people break up for lots of reasons. We weren’t a good match from the start. But the idea that he’s some high value alpha and I’m a used up ho is just so fucking silly, it was the stupidest most embarrassing way for my 7 year relationship to have ended.

It’s important to hear the opinions of people who disagree with you if they are being genuine. Joe Rogan and the rest are not good faith people. They are promoting disinformation and hate. And I think you are too.

I watched my dad end a lifelong friendship because the friend got sucked down the right wing garbage chute. He has not rebounded from his loss, but he can’t tolerate that friendship and just “not talk abt politics” around the guy.

My mom mentioned that my dad has been watching some concerning (in her words, “annoying”) YouTube content lately. Last time she said that it was America’s Got Talent, but this time it’s white men arguing with cops. I visited and asked if he would show me. He jokingly said “are you gonna violate my rights?” And I very seriously said “yes. I need to make sure it’s not Jordan Peterson or Joe Rogan or someone even worse”. He got a little bit offended and said “you know me better than that, I’m smarter than that”. But the thing is, you start by watching something innocuous like some idiot sovcit arguing with cops and the algorithm pipeline feeds you nazi shit from there and you don’t even know it.

For context, my parents are the kind of leftists that don’t know what leftists are. My mom calls herself a bleeding heart liberal, and my dad sees the media say things like “radical liberals” and jumps up off the couch screaming “you bet your ass im a radical liberal!” But they’re left of liberal, they just don’t have the language for it.

I’m not worried that my dad is gonna seek out nazi propaganda, im worried it’s gonna find him anyway and I want to throw his phone in a lake.

Maybe shower thoughts wasn’t the right community for me to have my existential crisis. But I wish i could block “sovcit” on my dad’s phone and “trad-anything” on my mom’s phone, not because I think they’re dumb (okay maybe a little) but because this shit is so toxic and intrinsic and scary and my parents are so dumb.

I left reddit during the api drama last year (more than a year?). I did it on principle. The content on lemmy is not comparable to the niche communities on reddit. Yeah, Steve Huffman is a little pissbaby or whatever the current meme is. But lemmy doesn’t have the art communities or the weird goofy shit that reddit did, and as a chronically online loser, my life is a little emptier without it. And I know how stupid and unimportant that is, which is why I’m here and not there.

Plus the porn on lemmy is just like… so disappointing and sparse.

Unrelated- I’m ready to switch to Linux, but do I really have to learn what a distro is and how to build my own PC? Can’t I just buy a Linux PC ready to go? Please?

I work in horticulture and tend to plants- transplanting into different sized pots, pruning, yknow, physically interacting with plants. I also monitor the environment of the greenhouse- temperature, humidity, amount of water in the soil. Recently my boss has implemented ai and sensors to read the room and adjust the humidity and the temperature and monitor the water levels automatically. It doesn’t work very well, because there arent sensors evwrywhere, and some parts of the greenhouse get better ventilation than others, so the temperature fluctuates. Me and my crew know where the hot spots are, the robots don’t. The plants are suffering. We are doing extra work and killing off more plants on average than we did a few months ago.

About 1/3 of my crew has quit or been fired over the last year, and none of them have been replaced.

I’ve asked for a raise because I’m doing a lot more work with a lot less people, but they don’t have the budget for me, since we just implemented all this ai that’s gonna make my job so much easier.

I got written up for having a bad attitude (aka asking for a raise) and am now on probation at work. I am almost certainly about to lose my physical labor job to a robot and.it is blowing my fucking mind.

There’s a unique trauma that comes from watching your parents be wrong like this. If your teacher were a normal person, your dad could have been correct. A normal teacher may have said, “this wasn’t the assignment, but good effort, good proactive problem solving, good teamwork with your dad”. Instead, your dad, who you trusted, who you looked up to as brilliant and infallible (I’m generalizing here, abt kids and parents, maybe not your relationship specifically), convinced you to think outside the box and then you were punished for it.

My mom had a typewriter and then we were one of the first families to have a computer and a printer among my classmates, and my mom always made me type my homework because she thought it would impress the teacher. I got in trouble because I was supposed to be practicing handwriting. The teacher never told my mom tho, so i was made to type at home every night. And then I’d just re-write it on the bus in the morning. And it would look bad because the bus was moving haha! And now I have TERRIBLE handwriting!

I get them from the farm lady down the street for like twelve bucks, she even let’s me pick out the one I want, who sold you a single chicken for $75? Shame on them.

Almost 2 months.

Lightening struck near my house once, blew up the transformer on the power line, exploded a giant oak tree in the back yard, and killed a wire leading from the power line into the circuit box. Also the circuit box blew up. It took over 7 weeks and 4 professionals looking at it before we could figure out what needed to get fixed.

We did use a generator occasionally so it wasn’t 7 weeks straight, but we would go as long as we could between uses because iirc gas was very expensive at the time, and technically the house had no power for that long.

Idk if this counts as a phrase, but on the internet, people talk about their pets crossing the rainbow bridge when they die. That’s not how the rainbow bridge poem goes. Pets go to a magnificent field when they die. They are healed of all injury and illness. When you die, they find you in the field and you cross the bridge together. It’s much sweeter the way it was written than the way people use it.

I may be remembering it wrong, but I think world was one of the few accepting people without a referral during the reddit migration. That’s why I use .world. I also don’t really understand federation besides it means I can see other instances, but I only barely know what that means. There were a lot of “what is the fediverse” posts when I first joined, and they were helpful, but maybe too simplified?

I also remember thinking .world and .ml were the defaults when I started.

I just had a horrible thought after reading your last paragraph. The safety law regarding the back seat could be applied to fetuses via a law banning pregnant women from driving or sitting in the front seat, taking away even more autonomy.
