Well said. I personally enjoy using a systems-level language with a handful of functional programming features. I also enjoy the support for async runtimes and other concurrency features (channels).
Rust allows me to get away from more boring (to me) languages (e.g. JS/TS, Java, Kotlin).

To summarize, I don’t see the Hyprland devs trying to harm others. Folks like DHH are a different story. Of course this might all change tomorrow - who knows?

I’m not sure I understand the opposition to Hyprland though. I enjoy using Hyprland, so I’ve tried to make an informed opinion on whether the project is harmful. Note that I have only reviewed public information, so I might only be seeing the tip of the iceberg.
According to his blog posts, the creator of Hyprland seems to have received criticism well enough (back in 2023). Are other people in the community the main concern or am I missing something? Forgive my ignorance

I think there’s a healthy amount of bs in there (Chrome, C# as traditional?), but some of it checks out. I like a mix of old and new but try to stay away from proprietary. Current favorites are probably Emacs, NixOS, and Rust.
I’ve personally become pretty fond of the syntax and incorporation of FP features. In all fairness though, I haven’t written much C or C++ for the last two decades.
Rust incorporates some of my favorite features from FP with handy green thread ergonomics. I’m not a fan of Go, so this gives me a great option for microservices when I can avoid Node.js.

I am largely concerned that the development and evolution of generative AI is driven by hype/consumer interests instead of academia. Companies will prioritize opportunities to profit from consumers enjoying the novelty and use the tech to increase vendor lock-in.
I would much rather see the field advanced by scientific and academic interests. Let’s focus on solving problems that help everyone instead of temporarily boosting profit margins.
I believe this is similar to how CPU R&D changed course dramatically in the 90s due to the sudden popularity in PCs. We could have enjoyed 64 bit processors and SMT a decade earlier.
Driving a manual is pretty easy, but it depends on how you handle failure. The learning process requires making a few mistakes while you become familiar with a clutch and shifting gears.
Also, I think it’s much easier to learn if you know what the parts are doing. Watch some videos on how it all works and what different RPMs sound like.

The learning curve might be a little high in some regards, but you may want to try NixOS. There are quite a few services ready to enable and customize for self-hosting, and the design makes updating packages fairly simple.
To be clear, NixOS is not a “simple” solution, but it does work well for self hosting.
