Running an actively used Peertube instance is a lot more expensive than, for example, a Lemmy instance. Videos take up a lot more storage than text. Not only that, the videos also need to be processed and then served. Who will keep paying for the monthly server bills?

Then there’s monetization. Most YouTube creators are there because they make a living out of YouTube. There is no such thing on PeerTube. They would need to solely rely on donations.

The ideal PeerTube network would be where every somewhat big content creator ran their own instance and maybe a few general instances for smaller content creators that are regularly donated to.

If YouTube ever gets killed by Google, don’t expect many people to come here.

It’s better to tell them about federation and decentralization before they join and start asking why there are duplicate communities with the same name (I’ve seen people asking similar questions about the absolute basics of federation here before in some communities). Not in detail, but enough to give them the basic idea.

And if they find it “difficult”, then we already prevented someone from wasting storage space when they would leave the fediverse after a few days anyway.

I used podman. Though you probably can use Ansible, if you want it simple.

There are also a few container management UIs like yunohost that let you deploy Lemmy with a click, but last I checked, it used a very outdated version of Lemmy. There’s also elest.io.

The update cycle seems to be pretty unstable, but it definitely does not only get updated every year. The last update was about a month ago. And the update before that 2 months.
