However, the interest (on Lemmy-aligned circles at least) in self-hosting, reducing depedence on large tech companies, community building on smaller scale online and offline, has me excited again that the smaller counterculture can co-exist with the mainstream profit-motivated social media culture.

Well, anything you post online could be scraped by AI. This is an open public-facing forum so there’s no real expectation of privacy (even DMs). And personally I’d rather have everyone who wanted to see what I have to say be able to see it, instead of some for-profit entity deciding who can see it or if they want to package up the whole dataset to sell to an AI company.

Crafty admins check their server traffic every now and then for unusual bandwidth spikes from scraping activity and can ban certain address spaces or client types. But those are more band-aid solutions that will only deal with performance hits, it can’t prevent archiving nor AI model-ingesting to begin with.

So if a brand new instance is started, it does not retroactively receive any content from other servers. Only ones that were connected by a link at the time content was posted will have a copy, essentially.

This is the important part. Starting from this Friday, individuals and businesses affected by the lawlessness of “too big to fail” companies will be able to make their own cases rather than waiting for the government to put together one.

Many songs if I like enough I figure out some of the words when looking for the title. Otherwise I remember them then forget them for a while. A couple famous examples I like:

Some people are addicted to sugar to the point where every beverage must be sweet flavoured.

I have water, but othertimes I am sugar addicted so I want a different beverage.

Also I have had tap water in various places across Canada. Most are decent, some are especially delicious, some have awful after tastes and even smell weird (sulfur or chlorine). If that stuff runs to your home I can understand why people prefer bottled water, tea or soda instead of tap water.

Well, here’s hoping you have a better time with us on Lemmy! My Reddit account is 8 years old, but I stopped using it and have been on Lemmy full time for 2 years now.

I think the issue is you are posting too early for Reddit, you should be commenting for the first week at least.

Essentially, the coarse-grained spam-filter assumes that anyone that has a whole bunch of posts ready to go the day they sign up is a bot spammer. Even here on Lemmy, if you sign up then immediately try to copy and paste a post 10 times to different communities, you will get reported and banned for spamming.

The principle behind it is like any social space online or offline: if you are a legitimate new member, you will start on the fringes and slowly settle in, from introducing yourself to a few members, attend events, to then asking questions, before making any influential speeches or going into a leadership position. Anyone trying to fast track that will be met with suspicion from members.

Reddit and Lemmy are similar in a sense. you start as a lurker, become a commentor, then you are well-adjusted enough to post.

The case I know of a company wanting to get the “efficiency” of using chatbots instead of people but not the responsibility of one, is Air Canada. They were held responsible in that case of their AI agent’s policy hallucinations. Though the customer had to go through many hoops to get to that point and probably others were affected without due recourse.
