How are there so many people in this thread talking with such confidence and yet know absolutely nothing? SpaceX is the reason NASA doesn’t need to rely on Russia to get astronauts to and from the ISS, so that’s one huge benefit. And Starlink is in such a low orbit that their orbits are constantly decaying and will burn up in the atmosphere without any orbit corrections. So there will never be a chain reaction crash.

3·1 year agoEvolution isn’t some sentient force striving for perfection. There is a lot of retarded stuff that we have evolution to thank for. This could just be a side effect of some other trait that normally helps the fish survive. Plus, earthquakes don’t happen often enough to affect evolution in the long run.

13·1 year agoWhat do you mean from that distance? By the time he shot her they were <5 feet apart.
You’re right, it doesn’t change the fact that the cop completely failed at controlling the situation and she is now dead because of that, but it muddy’s the water and creates conversations that don’t need to be had (like this).
I don’t know why you seem to think that getting boiling water thrown at you would be like taking a hot shower, but that could seriously mess someone up for life.

News@lemmy.world•‘This Is the Worst Police-Shooting Video Ever’ - The officer who killed Sonya Massey didn’t see what I see.
14·1 year agoNope, she still had the pot in her hands up until the point he shoots her. You can even see steam coming off the ground after she gets shot.
I don’t think either of their lives are more or less important than the others, but I do think the officer has the full responsibility for how that situation plays out.
I just hate the dishonesty about the situation, it makes your criticism look weaker. You can 100% criticize the cop without lying about the facts.

17·1 year agoI think y’all need to rewatch the video then. Keep in mind that I agree that the cop fucked up big time and should’ve handled the situation differently, but it does more harm to not get the facts right. He didn’t shoot her when he was standing away and she was at the sink. She ducked behind the counter, he got closer so he could see her and make sure she’s not doing anything sketchy, and then he shot her as she was starting to stand back up with the pot in her hands still. Also I don’t like the defense that it’s bonkers to assume she couldn’t do harm to one or both of them since there are two of them. There are plenty of videos of people doing crazy shit even when outnumbered. That’s the scary thing about these situations is that things can become very bad very quickly.
I do agree with your last point though. She could still be alive if the whole situation leading up to the shooting was handled differently. But I think it’s silly to deny that there was potential for harm and that the cop had any right to be worried about the pot of hot water.

313·1 year agoAre you saying a knife couldn’t be threatening just because it’s used in a diner? What a stupid comment. Again, I’m not justifying the shooting, I think the cop fucked up to let it even get to that point, but don’t pretend like it was just a “pot of water”. You can still criticize the officer without lying about the facts.

321·1 year agoCome on… It was a pot of boiling hot water. If she did throw it at the cops that could do a lot of damage. I’m not saying it looked like she was going to throw it and I don’t think the shooting was justified, but don’t pretend like the cops would’ve just “gotten wet”. It doesn’t look good when you lie.

Not The Onion@lemmy.world•Japan’s ‘moon sniper’ probe made incredibly accurate landing, but is now upside downEnglish
2·2 years agoFair enough. I’ve just been jaded from reading people bash on SpaceX anytime anything in space “fails”. But yeah, those events are similar in the sense that on the surface it looks like a failure, but they met their main mission goal and learned a lot from it. It sounds like the engine issue might’ve happened for them before, so hopefully they got a lot of good data from this and are able to fix the issue.
It’s important to keep in mind that going to space is very hard. Landing on another celestial body is order of magnitudes harder.

31·2 years agoI don’t know why people insist on trying to diss SpaceX anytime there’s space news… Anyway, last time they missed the Autonomous Drone Ship was years ago when they were first trying to land. So I’m not exactly sure what you are referring to.
Plus, with space missions there are usually many different mission objectives, and with this mission the main mission was to “demonstrate its highly precise navigation and landing system” which they determined to be a success. The extra credit mission would be if it landed properly and they were able to do more science with it.

It’s also frustrating that people keep saying SpaceX “relies on taxpayer money” as if we’re just giving them money for no reason. It’s all contracts! SpaceX only gets money for providing some kind of service. They’re not being bailed out or anything. The Musk hate is justified but so misdirected.
