  • It’s not just about losing history, but also mixing it with incorrect/wrong retellings of the story and fake news.

For example, you mentioned Homer, the writer of the Iliad and Odyssey who lived 3000 years ago. Homer’s existence is hotly debated, and even if he did exist, “he” probably didn’t write both poems. It’s far more likely that the Iliad and Odyssey were created as part of an extensive oral tradition by multiple travelling bards, who independently added, changed or removed verses; the story we know today as the Iliad is just one of many who happened to survive for a variety of reasons.

We also know very little of the broader trojan cycle (Cypria, Little Iliad, Sack of Troy, etc…) of which only fragments have survived. It would be as if, 1000 years from now, only the original SW trilogy survived, and only pieces or fragments of the other movies/TV series in the expanded universe remained - And to be fair, even this example is wrong, because it compares the Iliad/Odyssey to the “original” trilogy, but there’s no consensus about the relationship of the two Homeric epics with the broader epic cycle: as far as we know, they could have been created independently, and later edited to flow from one to the other seamlessly.

  • Dude, you literally say at the start of your comment that:

nerds used to be a little more “I know oh-so-much more about this media than you ever will” and a little less “I’m eternally uncomfortable about the changes being made to my media.”

You then proceed to call a movie director “selfish” and “fart-sniffing” for telling the story the way he wanted to tell it. You’ve got to admit the irony in all this.

Also, it’s true that big companies are following trends and fostering memes to drive engagement, but I very much doubt that they are willingly antagonizing their own fan bases to drive negative engagement. That sounds like a nightmare that no social media manager would purposely walk into. Nobody is willingly stirring the pot by making people theorize conspiracy theories about a secret leftist agenda. That’s just humanity for you. Some are good people, a lot suck.

The entities that are willfully stirring the pot are social media platforms, who have a lot more to gain by having those people scream at one another in their feeds, because controversial takes can populate comment sections more and faster than mild takes, which drive engagement on those social platforms even further.

  • When I was a child, I was the one pirating stuff for my parents.

I would pirate music and movies, and then we’d listen to/watch them during our long vacation trips. We had a small cd/dvd reader with a very, very small built-in screen, and we’d watch the movies on that thing.

I also used to pirate all kinds of stuff for me and my brother. Videogames, animes, movies, you name it. Nowadays I’ve legally bought most of the stuff I pirated when I was a child (everything that can still be bought legally; I won’t give money to greedy second hand sellers).

I thought technology was becoming common knowledge, yet I was surprised to see how many friends and people of my age still don’t know how to open a .zip file or play a console game on an emulator.

Judging from all your other replies in this thread, your stance is that:

    • Good deities don’t cause pain and suffering.
    • God did, but he was justified because they were all evil.
    • Maybe he killed a bunch of innocent people too, but he sent them to heaven, so it’s fine.

That’s some olympic-level mental gymnastics. I hope that, one day, you’ll think back to this discussion and realize your hypocrisy and free yourself from the religion of a god that has committed genocide multiple times, gatekeeps eternal life behind the worship of an evil entity and threatens all the others with eternal damnation for the only “sin” of not thinking like him.

Killing people is wrong, even if they are evil. It becomes even worse when it’s not a single homicide, but a large scale genocide of people whose majority (but not all) are evil.

  • I’m not a pet owner anymore, unfortunately, but I have a few to share.

My first dog was able to recognize the sound of my father’s car from the street, and would make sure that everyone in the entire building knew that she recognised the sound. She would bark from the moment the car appeared on the street, until my father was at home. We eventually managed to convince her to bark a little less, but even then, she would still bark a few times. Problem is, my father would frequently come back from work late at night!

My second dog loved to jump. Like, seriously, he was the world champion of jumping. He didn’t know how to run, he trotted and jumped to gain speed. When somebody entered our home, he would come to them and jump around them. A lot. Sometimes we were forced to put him in another room and close the door so that he wouldn’t greet our guests. He was very dumb. A very playful fella, though.

  • Dude, no one here is shocked or angry. There are just normal people calmly discussing ways to bypass yet another attempt from Google to stop AdBlockers. If anything, you’re the guy who spent the entire day yesterday screeching at people in another thread who don’t want to pay for YT Premium, and is still doing the same thing now, in a community dedicated to piracy no less. You just deleted the vast majority of your comments because you were too embarrassed when people called you out for licking the boots of a trillion-dollars corporation and being angry at other people who don’t want to follow your example.

Go touch some grass, it’s free (just like YouTube!).

  • I’m confused about what you’re trying to say, because none of those are YT alternatives.

TikTok is centered on short videos. Twitch is a platform for streamers, mainly for video game content creators. Curiosity Stream is a platform hosting professional documentaries and science shows, it’s great but it has nothing to do with the amateurish nature of YT content.

All of those cater to a specific niche of YT (YT shorts, video game let’s play, and science channels, respectively), but there’s a huge chunk of content that doesn’t appear on any of those services, but is present and thriving on YT.
