Shereen Wu says leading designer uploaded altered picture, amid fears AI could ‘turn back the clock’ on progress in the industry

Oh, I see, so because it isn’t new, we should just give up, go home and just accept racism as the norm?
MLK would be so proud.
No. Rant and rave against it. Rally behind a flag of exploited youths. Just don’t be surprised when the industry does this shit. It’s what they’ve always done, and it’s what they will always do. They will not change. Ever. So, when someone willingly joins them, and then complains about things being just as bad as everyone already knows, we can all look at them with pity, because they were too stupid to make the right choice earlier. “This wheat thresher destroyed my legs!” Says the person who jumped into the wheat thresher, while still inside the wheat thresher.
What exactly do you think we are doing?
You don’t have to be surprised to find something worth talking about. We talk about unhinged politicians all the time, yet we’ve come to expect them. We talk about school shootings all the time, yet they are not a surprise any more.
So your solution is for the victim here to simply leave the entire industry? Heh. Sure. Because that’ll totally pan out alright.
How many industry swaps have you done in your lifetime, bud? Because with a new industry comes new skillsets and completely different training requirements, which often takes years to complete, not to mention requiring completely different ways of thinking.
“This school shooter blew my legs off”, says the foolhardy teen who had the audacity to become a student in the USA, then complain about school shooters.
This is how disconnected from reality you sound.
You are rallying behind someone who did this to themselves. Anyone who joins that industry knows EXACTLY what they are getting into. Shit, if anyone in this thread even bothered to read the article, they’d know that she’s not even pissed she got white-ified. She’s pissed her face isn’t in the photo, so she isn’t getting the recognition. She actually says that. It’s in the article. She doesn’t give a fuck about racism. That’s all manufactured outrage from The Guardian.
Because we have the ability to do something about them. We can convince people to elect different ones next time. No one elects the fashion industry, and based on their long history of not giving a shit about the models, nothing in this thread is going to bring about change within the industry. It is diseased to the root. The only way to fix it is to destroy it.
Yeah, because a child going to school and being shot at is exactly the same as someone choosing to become a model…
So, because she made a very poor decision, we should all help her be as comfortable as possible while living with it? Sorry, life sucks. Sometimes you waste a good portion of it on bad choices. She isn’t entitled to an easy ride because she fucked up. I know plenty of people with useless college degrees and a mountain of debt. She can suck it up and go work at Hooters. They look for the same thing as the fashion industry. Sure, the manager might be a little grabby, but at least no one will photoshop her face.
So it’s her fault that she’s suffering from racial prejudices in the fashion industry? Because she dared to join and ‘we all know what they’re like’?
Interesting logic. Let’s expand on that.
Are all women at fault for any misogyny they encounter in the tech industry? That industry’s problem with women is VERY well documented, so they must know what they’re getting into, right?
Or how about BMEs working in healthcare. The racial discrimination issues there are also well documented, so we can let those slide right, because they should have known?
People like you are the reason these things don’t improve. Your acceptance of this status quo sickens me.
No. These are not the same.
Healthcare. Tech. Shit, restaurant work. Pick a fucking profession that is even remotely necessary for the human race to progress. Those we should change. Those are worth our time and energy to fix. Those have heroic figures fighting battles for the betterment of the ones that follow so that the next generation can have a better chance at a future. The fucking fashion industry is not that. It is not worth the time to save. It is worthless even on it’s best days. Throwing any effort into it is a waste of time. There is no benefit to humanity derived from walking down the runway in fuckwad cosplay. We aren’t developing new ways to fight cancer with Frenchname McDickface’s fall line-up. Burn it all to the ground. This girl wasted her life in this industry, and she is now just another cog in the machine. I feel no sympathy for her. She made her bed, now she has to lie in it. She is not fighting some epic battle against the forces of evil to make the world better. She’s a model. She’s walking in an oval down a strip of plywood for the amusement of some art school dropout and a bunch of 1%ers. Do not put her on some pedestal with people who are actually trying to make a change.
So fashion gets a special racism pass because other industries are more essential?
You also forget that fashion has a big influence on wider culture. If racism is accepted there, it will seep into wider culture from that front.
Or is she at fault because she trained to work in the fashion industry and not another industry that you would prefer?
You’re delusional, dude. Thinking people deserve racism because they work in a field you don’t like. Does that make you more elitist or racist? I can’t tell. Definitely a mixture though.
Fucking no, man. Jesus Christ. Everyone in this thread has some hard on for preserving the fashion industry. It doesn’t get a pass. It should be abolished. Destroyed. Removed from the world. Stop trying to fix it and start trying to destroy it.
And I’ll repeat myself yet again. Get rid of it. It has influence because we allow it to exist.
Yes. She is at fault. She made a choice. She wasn’t born a fashion model. This isn’t some LGBTQ+/BIPOC issue despite what the article would have you believe. It is OK to say that she has some blame in her situation. And she’s only 21! She still has time to get things right. She can still find another way to provide for herself. Shit. If anything, people like you saying that she can’t do anything but model because that’s all she’s done are the misogynists. I bet she’d be just fine in another field.
People deserve the consequences of their choices. It wasn’t like she got into the industry and then it suddenly turned racist, sexist, and shitty over night. If you’d read the article, you’d see that there is a history of this, and it’s a shitty article with a limited scope. Imagine if you’d have done any real research into it before talking all this shit. Maybe you’d see that I’ve been right all along. An asshole, sure. But a right one.
Apparently, much better to invent the racist motivation and put a biased headline. The perfect clickbait for the typical racist murcians (hilarious hypocrites who condemn whitewashing while defending blackwashing) who will ignore the main issue. I guess labor or image rights don’t sell.
People are allowed to be upset by racism even if the target doesn’t seem to care. The labor and image rights are also a major part of the story.
Besides, according to the article, Costello has been accused of shit like this before. I wouldn’t be so quick to say that the reporter decided to “invent the racist motivation”.
