Is Reddit purposely surfacing more controversial posts to increase engagement, and if so when did it start happening?

I used to like Reddit more than other internet platforms because Reddit didn't seem to follow the same strategy of increasing engagement by...

I’m kind of shocked that EA’s comment that was heavily downvoted wasn’t deleted. I guess EA wasn’t paying enough to get that service.
