Privatize the profits; socialize the losses. Good old capitalism.
You pay if your toilet leaks, they can be held to the same standard. They should have noticed their water meter reading crazy numbers and deciding to inform the utility company and investigate their pipes.
This is the best summary I could come up with:
Following an Iqaluit council meeting Tuesday where the company presented to councillors, deputy mayor Kimberly Smith told CBC the request seemed “a little preposterous.”
Alan Lawrie, who manages Iqaluit’s Northmart store, appeared before city council over Zoom Tuesday night.
The company says this is all from a broken pipe at building 194, which spilled more than two million litres of water, and went unnoticed until December.
They city eventually denied the ask, but suggested the company book a meeting with mayor and council.
Sheppard also said there’s no provision to allow for forgiveness of payment of water bills because of leaks, no matter who the applicant is.
“There’s no allowance in our policy or procedures in a situation like this where the leak was entirely due to a break in the pipes of the recipient,” he said.
The original article contains 516 words, the summary contains 135 words. Saved 74%. I’m a bot and I’m open source!
Normally the portion of the pipe on your property is your responsibility. It isn’t the city’s faullt if someone is too dumb to maintain their property.
Pay up, unless you’re willing to declare bankruptcy to shed the debt (which I doubt would be allowed).
