With voting underway, at least nine Republicans had cast ballots against his bid, likely leaving him short of the 217 votes he would need to win the job. More rounds of voting are expected if he does not prevail on the first vote.

If he prevails, the Ohio lawmaker who has spent years fighting with leaders of his own party could end up in a position that puts him second in line for the presidency.

Republicans who control the chamber nominated Jordan as a replacement for Kevin McCarthy was ousted as speaker by a small group of his fellow Republicans on Oct. 3.

“He is a patriot, an America First warrior who wins the toughest of fights,” Republican Representative Elise Stefanik said as she nominated Jordan for speaker on the House floor.

    He is a patriot

How does anyone say that with a straight face? What a terrible joke.

But they’ll probably get him in the chair after enough rounds of voting. I’d never put my money on the strength of character of house Republicans.

To be fair, he did not do the molesting. He just did absolutely nothing about it when it was brought to his attention a dozen times.

You’re beautiful. You’re capable. You will do wonderful things in your life, but no one, and I mean absolutely no one, needs you to play devil’s advocate for Jim Jordan. Respectfully.

That’s not playing devil’s advocate, that’s just clarifying the truth. When the truth is abhorrent, there’s no need to exaggerate it to make it sound worse.

This is a bad take. Jordan is a vile, loathsome human being, but if we’re going to demand fact-based decisions, we need to use facts ourselves. @SeaJ@lemmy.world is correct, and being correct isn’t playing devil’s advocate.

But that is not the definition of playing devil’s advocate. You’re technically correct when you play devil’s advocate. The point is abscond the truth.

‘someone who pretends, in an argument or discussion, to be against an idea or plan that a lot of people support, in order to make people discuss and consider it in more detail:’

When I hear someone say Jim Jordan is a pedo I say “why yes, he is.” Coz he’s complicit and even worse, never took accountability.

Did Hitler gas all 6 million jews? " Well, to be fair…"

Do you see how obnoxious you guys sound. We all know the truth. And the truth is Jim Jordan is complicit. If the world was objective, Jordan would’ve faced time for the crimes. EVEN THOUGH HE DIDN’T HE DO IT!But the world doesn’t work that way.

            You don’t defend that. Ever.

You’re not necessarily correct when you play devil’s advocate. You’re just saying “Let’s look at the counter argument to see where that brings us.” It’s a discussion strategy.

Hitler wasn’t just aware of Jews being slaughtered, he directly caused it to happen. Jordan didn’t molest anyone or direct anyone to molestation. What he did is grotesque: he knew about the molestation and did nothing about it. He was in a position to stop it and he did not. It’s disgusting that he’s not only free but he’s in Congress. That still doesn’t make him a pedophile though, and saying that is in no way defending him.

Jordan looked at all the embarrassment that McCarthy went through in his vote, and decided “yeah, I want some of that!”

The current Republican Party is the weakest least qualified group of politicians I have seen in my lifetime. They would be better of setting up a clown show.

Wow what a shock that a man who covered up the rape of kids at his school didn’t get elected to the third most important position in American politics.

No mention of who Matt Gaetz voted for. Journalists should be keeping track of what he’s doing to solve the problem he created.

Gaetz was one of Gym’s defenders back in 2018 when he was eyballing the house speakership on Paul Ryan’s way out.

So it wouldn’t surprise me if Gaetz is lining to volunteer for some of the ol’ Ohio State locker room routine.

18 against so far, I think 4 more haven’t voted yet. Can only afford to lose 4 so I gotta think there are 4 hardened never-Jordans among the 18-22 opposed.

McCarthy only had to bribe MAGAnauts, though, and they only believe in personal profit. Jordan has to bribe members of the establishment, and some of them actually believe in the rule of law.
